Groak!!!

I bet you didn’t know that the word groak is a verb meaning “to stare at another’s food in hopes that he or she will offer you some.” I certainly didn’t know that, but Richard Lederer sure did. And he shared it in this article about weird and wonderful words! The weird thing is that you will not find groak (and many other words) in the modern dictionary. Some words just fall out of favor over time. In the process, they fall out of the dictionary.

Now, here’s where things go from weird to downright bizarre…

I was sitting down eating an ice cream while checking out the latest issue of the Mensa Bulletin. And then I looked up.
There was my dog - groaking for a chance at some ice cream! And check out the page spread in the final picture below - It has pictures of ice cream on the left, and the groak illustration on the right.

I would say that it was a roinish drazel, but I don’t know what those words mean. Perhaps I should ask Richard someday.

Unfortunately, you need a Mensa Bulletin subscription in order to read the article, but you can learn more about the magazine for American Mensa by clicking on the button below.
