The Humanness of Language

Most of the articles that I illustrate for Richard Lederer’s Looking at Language column are hilarious. Rich is a special guy, and he sees humor in places that others miss. In fact, his latest book Lederer’s Language & Laughter is an excellent example of some pretty amazing work!

The March 2023 column only includes one funny line.
This article feels different.
It feels personal.

The Humanness of Language is more than informative, more than entertaining, it is a love letter to words. This single page is one of the most impactful things I have read (and I read every day). Rich makes an impassioned case that the birth of language was the dawn of humanity. And every time I reread this piece, I am reminded how “words and people are inextricably bound together.” Thank you sir!
